Two contemplatives from different traditions share principles and practices from their respective backgrounds in an exploration for the 21st century. We experience power and care in us and around us every day. We also have an inclination to care for others and to try to put their interests ahead of our own, urging us to be collaborative, helpful and well liked. Both impulses are valuable assets when they are balanced. In this workshop, participants will alternately hear various pieces of music played by pianist Maria João Pires followed by guided meditation by Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard. Maria João Pires will play five preludes and fugues from the well-tempered Clavier of J.-S. Bach. Before the first piece, in between the pieces, and at the end, Matthieu Ricard will take the audience through a series of short meditations on attentive presence, lovingkindness, compassion, celebration of goodness, equanimity, and pure awareness. With the music and meditation, each deepening the other, the wonder and contemplative openness from both will lead to an experience
of the fullness of the present moment and a focus on altruism and compassion. (...)
