CLEMENS HOSMAN, PhD is emeritus Professor of Mental Health Promotion and Prevention of Mental Disorders at the Maastricht University (Health Promotion) and Radboud University Nijmegen (Clinical Psychology) in The Netherlands and former director of their common Prevention Research Centre. He is also Visiting Professor of Prevention at the University of Zagreb within the PhD program on Prevention Science, University of Lisbon for the COPMI program of Department of Psychiatry, and University of Geneva (Psychiatry) within their masters on Mental Health Policy & Services and Public Mental Health.
His research in collaboration with many Dutch mental health and public health centres is targeted at prevention of transmission of mental disorders from parents to children, child & youth mental health promotion, prevention of depression, development of preventive community interventions, mass media education, program development, effectiveness studies, effect management, and innovation of prevention approaches and policies. He supervised many RCTs on effectiveness of prevention programs, offers (post) graduate prevention seminars and training at Dutch universities and in other European countries, and runs an international consultancy agency for prevention development and innovation. He is member of the International Prato Research Collaborative on Children and Families dealing with Parental Mental Illness.
He is involved in prevention and mental health promotion since 1969 and played a crucial role in the development of this field in the Netherlands and Europe. He has occupied many international functions, e.g. chair of the European WHO Task Force on MH Promotion and Prevention, chair of the International Clifford Beers Foundation on mental health promotion, board member of the US Society for Prevention Research, and chair of the Global Consortium for Prevention/Promotion in Mental Health. He was co-project leader of several EU-prevention projects (e.g. IMHPA, DataPrev) and serves as prevention consultant to NGO’s and professional and governmental agencies in many countries, including the World Health Organization. Over the last 20 years he organized several European and World Conferences on mental Health promotion and prevention. He is co-author of the PREFFI 2.0, an effect management instrument that aims to enhance the implementation of scientific knowledge on effectiveness in prevention policy and practice. He was principle editor of the WHO Report on Evidence-based Prevention of Mental Disorders (Hosman, Jane-Llopis & Saxena, 2004, 2005). He is advisor to several Dutch cities on public mental health, prevention and youth health and social policy.
In 2002 he received the International Collaborative Prevention Research Award of the US Society of Prevention Research; and 2001 Friend of the Early Career Preventionist Award for his life-long work in educating new generations of prevention experts. In 2005 he was given the honorary membership of the Dutch Society for Prevention and Health Promotion. He was awarded by the World Federation for Mental Health by being invited to give the George Albee Memorial Lecture in 2009.
